Replanting a growing tree
This research has evolved from the gigantic and enormous task of building a framework for an Islamic Psychology to Learning in Public i.e. sharing my understanding and reflections on areas of Psychology and how it informs my life as a Muslim.
I first encountered the idea of personality frameworks in 2020 through the NERIS Type Explorer (commonly known as 16Personalities). It was then an invaluable tool for me to begin understanding the complexity of human behavior. Later, in 2022, I discovered Yaqeen Institute’s paper, Souls Assorted, which ignited a desire to explore personality studies through an Islamic lens.
I wondered, initially, if it would be possible to relate modern personality assessments like NERIS to Islamic concepts of the soul and self. As I continued my journey—both spiritually and academically—I realized the field is much broader and deeper than I thought.
Today, my exploration has evolved. I’m currently focusing on the underlying mechanisms of personality, specifically through the MBTI’s cognitive function model and Enneagram. Rather than trying to build a new framework immediately, I’m allowing myself to study, reflect, and integrate what I learn over time, with the long-term hope of contributing towards an Islamic understanding of human psychology.
Personality studies remain a vital part of how I approach self-development, spirituality, and relationships as a Muslim. This project serves as a living record of my evolving thoughts and research—rooted in curiosity, faith, and a desire to better understand the complexity of the human soul.
